Much has been said about the idea of allowing students to bring their cellphones (and other IT gadgets!) to school. Until now, there has been no word about it from the powers-that-be concerning the rules and regulations regarding the bringing of cellphones to school. But, when it comes to gadgets, students really cannot wait for the blacks and whites to come out, and so, they have taken the news as permission to bring their gadgets to school.
The extremities of this eagerness to bring cellphones to school became very apparent in school today. The Senior Assistant was present before the SPM trial exam papers were distributed to the form five students. He reminded them that they should not bring their cellphones into the hall during examination and he said that those who had 'accidentally' brought their cellphones into the hall, to go and put them in their school bags.
To my surprise, there were more than thirty of them who left the hall to keep their cellphones. I look at this as pure indifference on the students' part. Indifference because they know that they should not bring cellphones to school (until the government comes out with a 'real' circular stating otherwise!) More importantly, they are SPM candidates who will be sitting for their real exam soon. They know full well that cellphones are totally prohibited from the confines of the exam hall (or rooms!) Strict actions will be taken against them if these gadgets are found on them in the hall (especially during exams!)
To these students (and the rest) I say, you can do without cellphones in school, no matter what earthly reason you may give. But if you insist on bringing them, wait for written permission to be issued, or face the consequences!
