English : Struggling And Bungling

Star Q
I read with awe the huge headline which summed up what the Deputy Prime Minister said recently; the location and purpose of which escapes my mind.  Not that they are important anyway.  More importantly however, a realistic look at the reasons why many young Malaysians struggle and bungle in English.

Another Reason To Be Grateful

Star Q

I was invited to attend a workshop at the English Language Teaching Centre last week; an opportunity which I had been looking forward to for quite some time now.  Not so much about attending the workshop but more about the chance to be at the premise.

Free Pahala For Safee

Star Q

Eventually it will come to this.  From anger and disgust, the whole unwarranted thing about this national striker smoking during dinner has blown out of proportion into gossip-mongering and lies.As usual a small group in the public will come up with lies which they think are mere jokes and something to be laughed at and forgotten.

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

Star Q

In a situation where you carry the important responsibility to defend your country's name and honour, the public will look upon you as their saviour.  They expect you to have a squeaky clean image without any cobwebs in your closet let alone having hidden skeletons.  The public wants you to be a super human who has no flaws whatsoever.

What's In A (Road) Name

Star Q

When I think about all the main roads in this country, be they popular roads with heavy traffic or even lonely, village roads, the names given to these roads would have been given much thought.  I personally often wonder at these names, and then I sink back into my seat and accept that the names given to them are probably justified especially if they are named after people, whether living or deceased.

This Orkid Is Not An Orchid

Star Q

I am attending another three-day course yet again and today is the first day of the course and thankfully the night slot has just ended; exactly on time.  I always hate it when during courses like this, the speakers get carried away with what they are presenting (and sometimes out of topic!) and lose track of time, leaving the course participants fidgeting in their seats, eager to go back to their rooms for a well-deserved rest.

A Quaint Little Shah

Star Q

It has been a very busy second half of the year for me; attending courses back-to-back for seven weeks in a row.  Who ever said attending courses is something to look forward to and not to be missed is obviously missing a marble or two.

An Immigrant In My Own Country

Star Q

Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, one of the busiest roads in Kuala Lumpur, used to be my favourite haunts many, many years ago; twenty-three years ago to be exact.  I was doing my one-year specialist course there and so almost every weekend I would take the bus to the city bus terminal and walked all the way there and back.

A Go at Flamingo

Star Q

I would be lost if I were to have driven to this side of Ampang on my own.  But I was lucky that all the driving was done by a colleague who knew her way around the area albeit with a little help from Mr. Waze!

Quality Versus Quantity

Star Q

Image sourced from google

I have always been someone who minds his own business.  I do my job to the best of my ability and I more often than not, take that extra effort to add quality to my work to ensure that there is added value to my work.  I don't complain because I love doing it.

Something for Sour Grapes

Star Q

Image sourced from google

Another bonus for next year!  Well, it's nothing much to shout about.  First of all it is nothing compared to the bonuses that employees in the private sectors (some banks for example) are getting every year.  Secondly, it's just a one off thing.

The Unbearable Bubur Chacha

Star Q

It is my third day here at Glory Beach Resort in the seaside town of Port Dickson and so far, I have been refraining myself from having to say unfavourable things about this place.  I have tried really enough to the point that I am almost bursting at the seams.

The Cat That Waits

Star Q

Once you take care of animals as your pets, cats especially, they become loyal to you albeit the occasional show of tantrums and disobedience once in a while.  But that is only to expected of these loving pets that we adore.

Honor In Silence

Star Q
iii.  Penyerahan Voucer Buku 2014

Image sourced from google
There is honor in being silent about all the good deeds that you have done for other people, I always say.  Naturally to me, a good deed that I do is not something that I would go around telling everyone how good I am or how generous I am or how concerned I am about someone else.

My Ohana Part 3

Star Q

I felt totally lost that morning when I reached Alor Setar a day later than the rest of my siblings. I didn't ask for directions from the locals who were at the railway station, so I just took my chances and went where my legs took me.

My Ohana Part 2

Star Q

The day my sister called me to inform about the passing on of her husband, it was a lazy Sunday for me.  My wife was hanging the clothes to dry and I was flipping through the pages of the Sunday Star newspaper.  It took a good five minutes for the news to register into my brain.

My Ohana Part 1

Star Q

It is always difficult when someone who is close to you suddenly passes on leaving you with literally nothing but the clothes on your back.  Such is the case of my sister who recently loss her husband who had nothing to his name except, well, his name.

What In The World.....?

Star Q
Everyone was in Malaysia reeling in shock after the MH17 tragedy; something that is way beyond the boundaries of our imagination.  Never in our wildest imagination did we expect such a catastrophe to befall our nation; and sadly twice after a short span of four months after the MH370 which still remains a mystery.

No More Respect For Her

Star Q

My first impression of her was of a very caring and motherly lady.  The sincerity of my thoughts were intensified further for the fact that even though she was sick, she still trudged on to continue doing her duties until it was time for her to retire from her profession or from life itself, whichever comes first.

A Place For Everything

Star Q

I am not against people who do extra work like small businesses to support their families.  In fact I am not embarrassed to admit that my own mother once had a small business of selling Nasi Lemak to help out with my family's expenses.  I can empathise with families where the fathers do not earn enough and the mothers take it upon themselves to help out in any way they can.

Fare Thee Well Sharifah Aini

Star Q

Yes, she started her singing career with the cover version of the late Normadiah's song, Seri Dewi Malam and many have said that this song launched her into the world of stardom  Everyone is entitled to his own opinion.  I on the other hand is of the opinion that Normadiah did better with the original version.  But that doesn't mean that the late Sharifah Aini could not sing well.  In fact, among the many local songstresses, she is my absolute favourite where melodious voice is concerned.  And there were very few of her songs that I did not like.

Ramadhan : An Exercise In Moderation

Star Q

To me , the word 'moderation' can be applied to many number of things and situations.  It does not only apply to the money we spend and on the things we buy, it also applies to the way we live our daily lives.  However, nowhere is it more prevalent than in the month of Ramadhan.

A Long Time Coming

Star Q

It has been quite some time since I was given the opportunity to attend professional courses.  If I remember correctly, the last time I was instructed to attend a course was 2010, that is four long years ago.  After that, the chances to go for courses seem to slip through my fingers.

A Little Bit Of Privacy

Star Q

The article written by Dr Aarzmi Yaacob which appeared in the Star newspaper a while back was not something that we are unaware of.  Much have been written, by teachers and those not in the teaching profession alike, who think they know more about teaching than teachers themselves, about the grouses and dissatisfactions that teachers experience.  Too much have been written in the media to let the public know about what teachers face and how teachers feel; unfortunately.

The thing is when the public knows every single detail about the goings-on in the teaching profession, teachers are sitting ducks to the criticisms from the public.  Putting out your dirty linen out to dry in the eyes of the public, makes it prone to public scrutiny.  Sadly but truly, the public (which is normal in human beings) tend to see the dirt collected on the linen and not what the linen has been used for.

The public thrives on picking out every single comment about the teaching profession and twisting them around, highlighting all the negative points.  Very seldom do we hear the public giving glowing remarks to the teachers and throwing them roses.  So much so that even on the once-a-year Teachers Day, we still get scathing comments from the public condemning the teachers.

When teachers and every other Tom, Dick and Harry write about all the minute details of the teaching profession, you can expect people to know your secrets.  I mean, imagine if a husband and wife tells the whole world about what they do every day, their quarrels, their interests and the bedroom stories, people are bound to pick out the ones that appeal to them; the sordid details.

Similarly with teaching, it would be instrumental to the teaching profession if less is said about it in the daily papers, especially with regards to the details about what teachers actually do.  I mean, it isn't every day that we read about nurses administering medicines to patients, or how they take care of them or what actually goes on behind the walls of clinics or hospitals.  We don't hear nurses harping about what they do and how the public should react towards their profession.  The same goes with other professions.  They do not expose their secrets to the public and hence, their occupations are not open to public scrutiny.

As for the teaching profession, the damage has been done.  There is no turning back to rectify all the mistakes done when teachers and non-teachers go public about the teaching profession.  Perhaps it is time to take the silent approach and let the public know only what they are supposed to know.  Perhaps teachers should stick to what they do best, that is teaching.  As for the public, they will thrive on what ever information teachers have to feed them.  If teachers teachers stop feeding them, then perhaps they will die; or at the very least be less intrusive towards the teaching profession.

What Do You Say...

Star Q

What do you say to someone who
Through all the pain of raising you
Has been patient when you were not
Has been the referee when your siblings fought
Who stayed awake when you were ill
Throughout the nights, so calm and still

A Future Teacher That Needs Teaching

Star Q
Many things have been said about what you post onto the walls of Facebook.  We are constantly reminded not to put up pictures that incriminate us in the future or statements that can hurt other people or even videos that are deemed not fit for public viewing.

Rubbish-Throwing Neighbours!

Star Q
iii.  Pot-Luck Untuk Cikgu Azri

My missus cleaning our neighbours drain!

Cleanliness is a very important aspect of our daily lives and nowhere is it more important than in the housing area that you live in.  It is even more crucial when you consider the fact that the cleanliness of a housing area cannot depend on the occupants of one or two houses alone; in fact it warrants the concerted effort of everyone in every household.

Not Worth The Concern

Star Q

Ever had a colleague who totally ignores you when he is enjoying himself or when he decides to go outstation?  And that very same colleague who comes after you like a life-line whenever he has some task to complete or when he needs your help?  Unfortunately, I have that kind of colleague.

With Promotion Comes Great Responsibilities

Star Q

Getting a promotion can represent a high note in an individual's career, especially when the promotion comes with a certain amount of salary increment and other perks like a beautiful and comfortable office of your own plus less subordinates to contend with.

Thank You for the Hello!

Star Q

It was quite a surprising turn of event for me, when after twenty-six years of teaching, I decided to leave the profession that I have come to love and cherish.  It was not an easy decision, I must add, but one that I had to make because of the many things that I personally see as things that do not want me to be a teacher per se!

Stop Passing The Buck!

Star Q

I have written quite a few times about parents knowingly delegating the responsibility of raising their children to the next person which are the teachers.  It is easy for parents to blame everything that happen to their children on the teachers, because they are the only adults around and according to them, these teachers are paid not only to teach their children, but also be their children's nannies.

Manipulative Or Merely Enthusiastic?

Star Q

Some teachers get enthusiastic about the things they do especially if it concerns things that they are passionate about.  Sometimes, without realising it, the teacher's enthusiasm can have some negative repercussions mostly where the students' parents are concerned.

No Vice In Good Advice

Star Q

We are already into the eighth day of search-and-rescue operation for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370.  After more than a week of a fifteen-nation search and still nothing to show for the efforts, families and friends of the passengers and crew of the ill-fated flight, can only hope for a miracle.

The Right To Do No Wrong

Star Q

I guess it's just human nature for people to talk.  People just like to talk about, well, anything under the sun.  Some people especially talk about things even they themselves don't know about or are not expert in.  They simply talk to exercise their rights as humans and neglect to consider the wrongs they might do.

Bringing Up Kids

Star Q

Whoever said parenting is an easy job obviously has never been a parent before.  It is easier said than done for motivators to give advice to parents about how to raise children.  The advice given is usually based on your ordinary, stereotypical family which cannot be applied to other homes.  And we all know that each home is different from the other, in many ways.

Yo Te Voy Amar

I'm at a loss for words today, which is an odd thing for me especially when it comes to writing down my thoughts.  Sure I'm not good at articulating my feelings but I'm thankful I can still write them down albeit a little too superfluously sometimes.

A School's Product : Teachers or Students?

Star Q

When people talk about school, they generally think about what their children do there, what they learn and what they hope their children would achieve.  In short the product of a school should ideally be the students!  They never think about what the teachers should do because as far as they are concerned, they know the core business of teachers, and that is to teach their children; or so they think!

Pity The Students And Teachers.

Star Q

Most Malaysian schools do not have conducive environment for studying especially those in rural areas.  The morning classes where the temperature is cool is the best part of the day for students to study and for teachers to teach.  But as the day turns hotter in the afternoon, everybody becomes restless and all they can think of is to abandon school and return to the comfort of their own homes.

Let Teachers Do What They Love To Do

Star Q

At the beginning when I was first posted twenty six years ago, school started at 7.40, just as it does now.  However, school was over at 1.30 in the afternoon back then.  There were very few meetings and teachers then really concentrated on what they were supposed to do as stated in their appointment letters; that is, to teach.

The Naked Nasi Lemak

Star Q

Image sourced from Google

I am sure almost everyone has read about the comments made by one of Malaysia's most celebrated chefs, Chef Wan, about the dismal and unappetising Nasi Lemak served to him on board our national carrier bound for Thailand.

After Two Years.....

Can't believe that I have been too busy to write that I have actually left this blog untouched for two long years.  A lot of thing...
