Negaraku! Our national anthem, when sung, voices our commitment and full-hearted pledge, that this country that we are living in, is ours. This country, where we were all born in; this country where all of us have prospered, has given us a lot of things that we probably will not get in most other countries.
But when we talk about singing the Negaraku, how many of us can proudly say that this country is ours and sing the anthem proudly and loudly? My immediate response is, not many; and this group of people get smaller when you go down to school level.
I have on many occasions noticed that quite a large number of students, and always the same ones, do not seem to sing the anthem during the weekly school assembly on Monday (I have on many occasions also warned them about it!) While the rest of the school is singing the anthem proudly, these students will be talking to each other plus gestures! (you can't tell who they are just by reading this statement!) And some of them, apart from talking, would be checking their make-up and combing their hair (you can tell who they are by reading this statement!)
There is no logical excuse for these students not to sing the anthem together. They were born here, they have reaped the riches of this country, they have lived a safe and secure life here and they have acquired every single advantage as a Malaysian citizen.
The least they can do for the country is to sing the Negaraku proudly. If, as a Malaysian citizen, they can't even do that, then they should not be one!
