There has indeed been many such reports involving express buses. Whether or not the drivers of these buses were at fault is immaterial. What is most paramount is the fact that these buses are transporting passengers who have paid for their services and have in a way placed in their lives in the hands of the drivers of these buses.
That being said, it is still disheartening to read about so many recurring accidents involving express buses especially when the drivers are at fault. There have been many situations of sleepy drivers who drive in the middle of the night or drivers who break the highway speed limit just to reach certain destinations at a certain targeted time. It is also disheartening when passengers reprimand these drivers, they get an ear full to the extent that they are warned that they may be asked to disembark.
Perhaps it is about time the government impose some kind of rule on express bus operators and hold them responsible in case of any accidents involving passengers. One way is to impose a blanket insurance policy on every bus making a journey to any destination. In case an unfortunate incident happens, each and every one of the passengers will be compensated through the said insurance policy. And the insurance should differ according to the severity of injuries incurred by the passengers.
Unfortunately, it is safe to say that this suggestion may fall on deaf ears just like many other suggestions that have been successfully implemented but have failed to follow through. Loop holes in the programmes and underhanded meddling of certain individuals will continue to ensure that any policy or programme that can benefit the victims will fail miserably and see an untimely death.
Sharks are making profits from people who use these mode of transports and just like their namesake, will continue to profit when these people die in accidents involving these buses.
