I read with much amusement one person's anger over a proverb mentioned by one of our most prominent national figures. Obviously the person's anger was mainly due to his ignorance pertaining to the meaning that the proverb intends to convey (or perhaps he just refuses to admit that the prominent national figure is much better in English than he is?)
Of course, such a proverb, being from an Irish origin would have such a carefree attitude towards the use of the words (devil and angel) probably due to their open-mindedness.
However, the person making the comment, being such a learned person, should not go all our brandishing his anger before doing a little (even less than that would reveal to him the real meaning of this proverb!) research about the origin and meaning of the proverb. He would surely realize (if he chooses to realize!) that the meaning of the proverb does not have anything to do with the devil or angel at all!!!
And so, due to the possibilities I mentioned above, I realize now why that prominent national figure chose not to retaliate with his own comments on the matter or the noise made by that person! I guess because he also knows that empty tins make the most noise!
