I listened in amazement to a statement made by a housing developer during one of his press conferences. He was complaining that there has been no takers for the low-cost houses that his company has built for buyers from middle income brackets. He, however, noticed that these buyers had opted to buy houses that are set at prices from RM150K and above.
Well, actually I had long anticipated such a comment to be passed. I mean, no prospective house buyer in his right mind, would look for a permanent residence that is built in a housing area that is placed in the middle of nowhere! Granted, the house built there may be much cheaper, mainly because the land that it is built on is a piece of land no one would touch with a ten foot pole (or less!)
Let's look at things realistically. If a buyer were to buy that house, petrol money alone would be a burden on his expenditure, with travelling distance not less than one hour one way (at least!) And then there is the difficulty of sending children to school if working parents are not able to send them. School buses would charge an arm and a leg, to go the distance to fetch and send these children to the nearest school (where I wonder?) And if accidents happen, it would really cost an arm and a leg! Thirdly, would be the cost of daily necessities like food. Grocers who set up shop in these areas would double charge the foodstuff they sell, blaming the high cost on the petrol they pay to transport the foodstuff there! These are just a few of the problems. I'm sure there are a lot more!
People from the middle income bracket look for low cost houses to ease the burden on their pockets, so that they have a little left over to spend on leisure (not always!) with their family members. However, if quality family time is what they have to sacrifice in order not to undergo the problems mentioned earlier, then unfortunately, so be it.
Housing developers don't care whether buyers have quality time with their families or not! The only thing they care is that they themselves have quality time with their families! And with the profits they make from the middle income earners, it seems they will have lots of it!
