Star Q
Hamka said that a child's good manners should be taught since young when he is easier to mould or nurture; before he is destroyed by normalcy that is difficult to let go. You can actually teach a seventeen year old about good manners, but the idea will be just that; learned but not practised.
I was at a motivational talk for a group of from 5 students about the techniques of answering one of the subjects in the coming SPM examination. To be fair, there were some students who were busy taking down notes and actually paying attention to the speaker, because when the speaker cracked a few jokes, some of them did laugh.
However, there were a few students who couldn't care less about the efforts made by their school to ensure that they be given the best possible chance to pass in this particular subject by having this talk. In fact, they were the ones doing the talking, at the back of the hall, while some were even very conspicuously, fiddling with their mobile phones! Talk about bad manners!
And to rub salt into an already gaping wound, a few of them even echoed with the word "Okay" every time the speaker finished his sentences; supposedly in an attempt to hasten the ending of the talk! It was only the speaker's good manners that stopped him from reprimanding these students for being rude to him!
No fingers should be pointed as to who should have taken the early responsibility of teaching these particular group of students good manners (without stating the obvious!) But when you consider the fact that these students are already seventeen, and are at the age where they are able to distinguish between good and bad manners, the fingers then should be pointed at them!
