The Scene of the Crime |
Some things are easier said than done, like loving your neighbour for instance. Loving your neighbour or to put it bluntly, respecting your neighbour, is actually more often than not, a two way thing. It is almost impossible to respect and tolerate your neighbour when you are the only one doing the respecting; and you are the only one tolerating every single thing that your neighbour literally throws at you.
An incident in question that occurred just last night is a clear cut example of loving thy neighbour which requires you to love thy neighbour back in return. This whole neighbourhood has always tolerated this particular neighbour and swallowed in sheer pain the things that they dish out. But yesterday, they brought the idea of neighbourly tolerance to a different and dangerous level.
This particular neighbour has actually for quite some time now got on the nerves of a majority of the people in the neighbourhood, so it is understandable when last night was the straw that broke the camel's back. Being tolerant neighbours, we understand that celebrating ones silver jubilee wedding anniversary is a big thing; something worth celebrating for three consecutive days. But should the celebration be at the expense of your other tolerant neighbours, to the extent of holding a public concert on a public road, singing karaoke, song after song, at the highest possible volume through powerful sound systems, until two o'clock in the morning(1.58 a.m. to be precise, because I couldn't sleep and kept looking at the clock on the side table beside my bed, every five minutes!)
What made things even worse was, a report that I made to our 'friendly neighbourhood cop' fell on deaf ears because he didn't even turn up to oversee the disastrous din! I know that according to the law, all public noises should end at the stroke of midnight! Apparently, the law enforcer didn't feel it was necessary to uphold that law last night, an action that is open to much speculation by the suffering public.
Come to think of it, we can do without this complacent friendly neighbourhood cop, if everybody in this neighbourhood love their neighbours!
