Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

Star Q

In a situation where you carry the important responsibility to defend your country's name and honour, the public will look upon you as their saviour.  They expect you to have a squeaky clean image without any cobwebs in your closet let alone having hidden skeletons.  The public wants you to be a super human who has no flaws whatsoever.

However this is not entirely possible when such an expectation is placed upon a mere mortal who, just like us, has his own flaws and shortcomings.  I mean, a person cannot be expected to carry such a heavy burden like his country's name without feeling any kind of stress.  In fact the stress felt by this particular person is so huge that the situation would be similar or even worse if undertaken by any other person.

The public that is not being placed in his position, can hit back freely at every single thing that this person does; anything that they think will probably jeopardise the country's name is open to their scrutiny and unjust accusations.  This they do without realising (or refuse to realise) that the public figure is probably doing what he is doing to let off a bit of steam; to de-stress in a way that can only be effective to him.

Smoking is undeniably not a good habit to have but if it helps the individual to de-stress and get some of the weight off his shoulders, then so be it.  After all we have seen so many other people around us, including the people close to use like friends and relatives, who smoke just to release some of their daily stress.  Do we become angry at smokers only if they are public personalities?  Do we get annoyed when one person out of, say eleven in a group of people who carry similar responsibilities, smoke to de-stress?  Do we ridicule them?

It is no wonder, after all the taunting given by the public towards this one particular individual, he retaliates by lashing out at the public.  And the public, after all it has done to this person, does not deserve any kind of sympathy and has no right to be angry at him.

Almost all the men in my family smoke; my dad, my brothers, uncles and nephews.  That doesn't mean I can hate them and throw hurtful comments at them because being adults, they know the repercussions of smoking.  In fact I think smokers know the disadvantages of smoking better than non-smokers do

Of course there's no such thing as 'if you can't beat them, join them'.  A better advice for this particular situation would be 'if you can't stand the smoke, just cover your eyes and turn the other way'.
