Star Q
I have written quite a few times about parents knowingly delegating the responsibility of raising their children to the next person which are the teachers. It is easy for parents to blame everything that happen to their children on the teachers, because they are the only adults around and according to them, these teachers are paid not only to teach their children, but also be their children's nannies.
In a recent case presented by a parent in a local newspaper recently, it was unpleasantly highlighted that students in this particular school were in the habit of leaving their school books in class whenever they go home. And I suppose, after having warned the students countless times, the school authority decided to collect all the books left in the classrooms and place them on the staircases in the school.
I agree with the parent's contention that we, including the teachers, should have a deep respect for books which is why the books should not be placed on the staircases. I also agree that teachers should not act like bullies (and not be bullies, as mentioned), be good role models and take up some responsibility where the leaving of books is concerned.
Okay, enough agreeing with the angry parent! Like, I mentioned earlier, the school would have reminded the students countless number of times not to leave their books in class or actions will be taken, and since the students chose not to conform to the set rule, they actually deserved to be treated as such.
In agreeing that teachers should be good role models in setting good examples, I also feel that parents should do the same, too. I mean, with the children being in their care most of the time (I repeat, most of the time!) parents have a sixth sense, where their children are concerned. Thus I feel that they should at least have a little sense of inquisitiveness when they see their children's flaccid school bags when they return home. Parents should practise their rights to enquire why their bags look 'slimmer' upon getting home from school compared to when they left home in the morning. Parents should remind their children to be more responsible towards their own books, as should they towards their children!
I have mentioned many times before, that as parents it should be easier to control your offspring which probably consist of two, three or four children. If parents consider this to be an arduous task, consider what the teachers have to go through with, not two or three or four children, but hundreds or in some schools, thousands of children!
So, stop passing the buck! It is time to stop delegating parental responsibilities to other people.
