Star Q
iii. STPM 2013
The misuse of technology has reached a new high recently which leaves a lot to be desired. Photos are maliciously edited, still pictures are inserted with speech bubbles giving an impression that the person in the picture is saying something (which he probably hadn't!) and photos that are extreme opposites being put side by side to encourage hurtful (to the people in the picture) response; most of the time, judgemental.
The people who do the things mentioned above may have the initial intention of making some light humour just to release his (or her) own stress. But when these pictures are uploaded onto social network, they eventually garner responses that are more than what the creator initially intended them to do.
Like I said earlier, some responses can indeed be honest and just as the creator intended them to be. But more often than not, responses created by these seemingly 'funny' pictures can unfortunately lead to defamation of character. Some creators use their pictures as a form of scandalmongering; something is probably not true in the first place but after generating a lot of attention, may eventually be taken as the truth.
I feel it is time the relevant authorities concerned with multimedia technology do something about this before the situation becomes even worse and eventually gets out of hand. It is also time for people to think about what they put onto the social network.
It would be better if people using the social network can talk about things that are beneficial to the public. Of course that wouldn't be as interesting as putting up something that is malicious and has the potential of destroying another person's reputation. It is time to stop doing this; think about it!
