When is World Book Day?

Star Q

Realistically speaking, does anyone really care about another day commemorated for a special something?  Does anyone even care that a special day is actually slated for World Book Day?  And just for the purpose of discussion, how many of us are really aware of this?  Worse still, how many of us REALLY read?

Of course, many will say that if we compare ourselves with other nations, we are relatively better readers at 2 books per year (according to a National Literacy Survey carried out by the National Library)  Indeed it is way better than another nation that read only 0.5 books a year.  Or, in fact another nation that read only six minutes a year on reading!

All the details aside, my real intention for this entry is to highlight the dismal effort students (not all) make in reading, or the lack of it.  Students, especially those in Form Six and higher education need to realize that they need to accumulate a lot of knowledge for their future undertakings.  This can only be achieved through reading.

Imagine a class of students given a topic like 'The Environment' to discuss and present orally.  More often that not, students are unable to come up with solid points for discussion and are also unable to elaborate on those ideas.  This inability is further hampered with students' lack of vocabulary range and grammar proficiency, which incidentally can also be achieved through reading.

It is understood that knowledge cannot be forced upon people, but if knowledge becomes a prerequisite (for students) to achieve better results and qualifications, so go for it.  And it knowledge can be achieved through reading, there's no better time than the present to start!
