Everyone was in Malaysia reeling in shock after the MH17 tragedy; something that is way beyond the boundaries of our imagination. Never in our wildest imagination did we expect such a catastrophe to befall our nation; and sadly twice after a short span of four months after the MH370 which still remains a mystery.
Through the various social networks people have been pouring their hearts' contents expressing their sadness and concerns. Undeniably, there are also those who wrote words of wisdom in order to give strength to those who have lost their loved ones in the tragedy.
But in the wake of all this there emerged a minor tragedy protruding its ugly head from the dark abyss of god-knows-where. That tragedy is caused by locals who call themselves Malaysians. These are the people who crave for public attention and try to get it by creating gossips and speculations based on the MH17 tragedy. In a time when everyone is being humbled by powers greater than ourselves, these small but influential group of people, create false information with the intention of getting innocent people biting at each other's necks.
One such gossip brought forth by one of these people, is the speculation that the tragedy may have been caused by the pilot who purposely flew into the war zone, out of the commercial route, and thus was shot down by rebels. The speculation made by the individual sounded more prejudicial because the pilot happened to be a Muslim Malay, fasting during the month of Ramadhan.
In times like these, not only should these people stop these gossips and speculations, but they should join hands, rallying with other Malaysians and other nationalities in memory of those who were on board that ill-fated plane. You do not lose anything by extending a warm hand of condolence rather than causing them more heart aches.
In the wake of this tragedy, Malaysians should realize or at the very least try to pretend that for now, there are no Malays, Chinese, Indians or other ethnic groups. For now at least there should only be Malaysians who are not only united as citizens who share and live in the same country, but also citizens who share in each others loss and do their very best to comfort each other.
