Fairness for All

Star Q
iii.  Egg Tarts

A school is a place where young people are taught about many different subjects including Moral Values.  It is always difficult for teachers to inculcate moral values in students especially when they are not taught to be morally apt at home.  Or at least that is how we always look at things.

How ever there are many situations that happen in school that would not be morally suitable which are seen not only by teachers themselves, but also by students.  These are the same students whom we go through pains to teach about moral values.  But, we see others not reflecting these attitude.  One of these moral values is fairness.

I heard of a school that had a special presentation for all the achievers in co-curricular activities recently.  The gesture was a commendable one because this would encourage other students to do well in co-curricular activities;  not only in their academics.  The awards given ranged from achievements in societies, clubs, sports and uniform clubs; all the way from school level to national level.  Even small and seemingly insignificant activities were given some kind of award!

However, a group of achievers in co-curricular activities were purposely left behind during the award ceremony.  It wouldn't have mattered much if these students did not win anything in the events they took part in.  The fact is, not only did they win something (champion in fact!), but they went to represent the state at national level; an achievement that none has managed to acquire for more than years (and may never will again in the next ten years!)

These students found their exclusion in the award ceremony to be unfair because not only did they win at the state level, they have also made the school a force to be reckoned with.  The teachers involved with the students also felt that the exclusion was unfair because, most of them forked out their own money to support the students during their activities and spent a lot of time an energy to ensure that these were given the chance to participate in co-curricular activities.

It was indeed a say and demoralizing day for these students and their teachers who excelled everyone's expectations in the activities that they took part in; sad because their achievements have not been acknowledged by the school, and sad because they were unwittingly considered by some double standard people to be not a part of the school; outcasts!.  That's fairness for you from teachers who teach about fairness!
