Validating Valentine

Star Q

PAS to go on campaign to discourage Muslims from celebrating Valentine’s Day - Nation | The Star Online

It is the same campaign every year where you will find people who say that we should not celebrate Valentine's Day.  There is nothing wrong with other religions celebrating Valentine's Day; it only applies to Muslims.  I may not be very knowledgeable religiously, hence I will only give my personal view on this matter without being judgmental to others.

Personally, if Valentine's Day means a day where you express your love or affection to those whom you hold dearly (literally or not!) to you, then I feel what is more important here is the idea of expressing love; which incidentally should not be confined to one specific day in a year.

I mean, if you love your spouse (wife or husband) which you should in the first place (if not you wouldn't have married him/her)  it makes sense to show your affection every day of the year; or at least as often as possible.  Tokens of affections need not be in the form of something expensive and it does not mean that you have to spend exorbitantly.  Tokens of affection can be in the form of a single rose that you bring home to your wife once in a while, or a hug before you leave for work in the morning or even a butterfly kiss if you are already late for work (probably because you have expressed your love excessively prior to that!)

A show of love for the husband in return can be in the form of preparing dishes that he really enjoys, for example; or perhaps a mug of his favorite drink waiting for him as he arrives home from work.  After all, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach and an occasional shoulder massage, doesn't hurt either; which in fact can do wonders!  More than a mug of his favorite drink can!

Showers of affections can then be saved for special occasions like birthdays, or anniversaries, or a raise in salary or the birth of the first child (which leads to the second or third and so on!)

So, it is clear that you don't really need to wait for one specific day to express your love to someone when in fact love can be shown every day of the year.  Well, almost every day!
