Haze Craze

Star Q

People never learn from the mistakes they make, even when the mistakes they make implicate other people in a more  negative way.  And worse of all, these people claim ignorance for the mistakes they make and find it easier to put the blame on the people who suffer from their mistakes.

This phenomenon of open burning which seems to be occurring annually by the farmers in our neighbouring country and this bad sense of polluting the environment also happens like clockwork during this time of the year jeopardizing the health of the people in this country.

And since this outrageous disregard for the citizens of neighbouring countries through air pollution occurs at the same time every single year, one wonders why hasn't the authorities of this country with this destructive habit taken any conclusive actions to curb it from continuously happening.

Steps could have been taken to organize and collect all the agricultural refuse and dispose of them in a more healthy and less polluting manner compared to burning them.  Strict enforcement of the law regarding open burning should be implemented at the beginning of this 'burning' season rather than wait for the situations to become serious to the extent of causing hazardous pollution to neighbouring countries.  Contingency steps to curb any form of opening burning, like deploying more firemen to specific hotspot areas and increasing facilities for example fire engines, should have been done many months before the 'season'.  In fact the finance for this large project should be included in the nation's annual budget.

These culprits cannot expect their neighbours to continue forgiving them for their actions.  Neither can they expect other nations to forever extend a helping hand in handling the open burning in their own country which they themselves started in the first place!

And on that note, these culprits should not be retaliating when their neighbours express their dissatisfaction and anger at their lackadaisical attitude towards such a damaging act.
