Ramadhan : An Exercise In Moderation

Star Q

To me , the word 'moderation' can be applied to many number of things and situations.  It does not only apply to the money we spend and on the things we buy, it also applies to the way we live our daily lives.  However, nowhere is it more prevalent than in the month of Ramadhan.

As I mentioned earlier there are many aspects of life which we can apply the idea of moderation to, but my discussion, being in the month of Ramadhan, will focus mainly on food.  It is almost sadly inevitable that after fasting for more than ten hours during the day, one would feel hungry and is prone to buying anything and everything one sees.

If we go to the Bazaar Ramadhan, we will be spell-bound by the beautiful and colorful array of sweet cakes and dishes.  Our senses will be enriched by the different smells of fried 'murtabak', roasted chicken and steamed sweet cakes.  Our eyes will be roaming about, looking greedily at all the enticing food and our hands will not be slow in forking out cash to buy these food; all according to the wishes of our hearts.

Personally, when I break my fast during Iftaar, I can only muster a warm cup of plain tea and two dates.  Henceforth, I am always hypnotized by the amazing ability of some people to fill the dining table with tonnes of food, followed by an orgy of gastronomic pleasure; almost every person at the table overcome by a scary feeding frenzy devouring more than they actually need.

And to make matters worse, these people even have the audacity to post the pictures of their food for Iftaar on social networks allowing others who are less fortunate to see the glutton that they are.  These poor souls will be looking at the pictures of more than one type of protein, carbohydrate, vegetables, fruits, sweets and drinks!

Ramadhan comes but once a year and these people who spend on food excessively and then eating them, seem to think they only have this 30-day period to eat up.  It's like for the other eleven months they will be starving or living a meagre existence.

I think where food is concerned Ramadhan is not the only time to exercise moderation.  In fact it should be practised all year round.
