It's a necessity! You work because you want the pay in order for you to live; to buy the basic necessities of life like a house (and the things that go with it!), a car (or two!) and food (some more gastronomically adventurous than others!). You would also want for what is more important like your children's education and most importantly, to save for your golden years (if you live that long!)
However in the quest to gain as much salary as possible, people would require some kind of promotion to commensurate the raise. And, realistically, with that promotion comes extra work or in the immortal words from the dialogue of Spiderman the Movie : with great powers come great responsibilities! It is only fitting that once you are given a promotion and a raise to boot, you are required to do extra work including some that are created especially for that promotion of yours!
Sadly, some people only feel that they can do without the promotion as long as they get the raise in salary. This is mainly because they do not want the extra baggage of work that comes with it! Wouldn't it be sad when you are given that promotion and raise, you suddenly go ballistic and demand (and successfully!) that that extra work not be given to you, much to the chagrin of others in the same situation as you; those given promotion and raise but do not complain about the extra work!
But the saddest thing about this whole ballistic and work-refusing scenario is that you get away scott free from that extra responsibility but you still get to keep that promotion and that salary raise! It doesn't really matter to you how others look at you (or look down on you!) as long as you have accomplished your mission! Mission Impossible: Accomplished!
